About the STAP

Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav has been adapted to Tamil as Suthanthira Thirunaal Amudha Peruvizha (STAP). It is an initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of India’s progress and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements. It is an embodiment of India’s socio-cultural, political, and economic identity. STAP is specially dedicated to the people of Tamil Nadu and the people of India, in general. As a part of STAP, TNNLU will be conducting various events from October 2021 to August 2022.

About the Event

Seventy-five years of Independence has witnessed changes in women’s roles and has opened up various opportunities for their growth and advancement in independent India. However, the social hierarchies faced by women are always hindering their well-being and growth. Surrogacy is one such issue where there is no clarity with regard to the rights and liabilities of the parties involved. Moreover, a proper regulatory mechanism does not exist.

The Indian Contract Act, 1972 is considered the basic law relating to contracts in India. As we are nearing our 75 years of Independence, it is high time we analyze the nexus between the Indian Contract Act, 1872, and the surrogacy contracts from a feminist perspective.

This national essay writing competition is organized by the students of the Batch of 2025, who are currently pursuing ‘Law of Contracts – II’, as part of the Suthanthira Thirunaal Amudha Peruvizha (STAP) initiatives to commemorate 75 years of Independence.

About the Institute of Law, Nirma University

The Nirma University Institute of Law (ILNU) is a constituent institute of Nirma University in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was established in 2007 as a result of Padmashri Dr Karsanbhai K Patel’s vision.

About the Centre

The Nirma University Institute of Law’s Centre for Social Justice is a research centre. The Centre engages in debates about critical social issues and how they intersect with the law.

The Centre’s mission is to promote social justice causes via rigorous research, collaborations, and knowledge exchange.

About the Essay Competition

On the topic of ‘Elimination of Barriers to the Exercise of Right to Vote,’ the Centre is holding its first essay writing competition.

One of the most important ways to participate in democratic government is to vote in elections. It ensures that the current government is evaluated on a regular basis, and that the people have the opportunity to elect their representatives. The mere promise of a right, on the other hand, is insufficient to ensure that it is meaningfully exercised by citizens.

Although the right to vote is a statutory right, the Supreme Court has determined that exercising it is a basic right guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution.

Participants are asked to investigate the constraints that may impede one’s ability to exercise one’s right to vote in the essay and offer ways to overcome those limitations.

Eligibility

The competition is open to students who are currently enrolled in and pursuing a UG (Bachelor’s) or Master’s Degree at any University/College in India.

Members of the ILNU’s Centre for Social Justice are ineligible to participate in the competition.

Submission Guidelines

  • The essay must be written entirely in English. Endnotes will be used to offer references throughout the essay.

    • Font: Times New Roman
    • Font Size: 12 for text; 14 for headings
    • Line Spacing: 1.5

  • Co-authorship is allowed to the maximum extent of only two authors.

About the Essay Competition

The St. Gallen Global Essay Competition is an international student essay competition that invites graduate and postgraduate students from all over the world to apply for a spot at the St. Gallen Symposium.

They have proven track records in the fields in which they work or study. The International Students’ Committee selects them by hand. The Knowledge Pool does not accept applications for membership.

Topic Question

Collaborative Advantage: what should be written into a new intergenerational contract?

The idea of a “generational contract” embodies the principles that younger and older generations rely on each other to provide mutual support across different stages of their lives. Inclusive education systems, sustainable welfare states and meaningful environmental action are some of many challenges requiring a cross-generational collaborative effort.

Yet, with the climate crisis, rapid technological change and societal aging in many countries, the generational contract and notions of intergenerational fairness have been challenged. Members of the younger generation are raising their voices as they reflect on how their futures are being compromised by current decision-makers.

What’s your specific and actionable idea that should be written into a new generational contract? Choose an area where you see evidence that intergenerational fairness is – or, going forward, will be – challenged and where the generational contract needs to be rewritten.

Potential areas include, but are not limited to, business strategy and the economy, inclusive governance and education, the welfare state and health care, environmental sustainability, or the world of work. Describe your problem and offer concrete and practical proposals how inter-generational fairness can be restored or reinvented. Explain your idea’s impact for the future.
