The Jharkhand High Court is one of the newest High Courts in India. It was established in 2000 under the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000, after the state of Jharkhand was carved out of the state of Bihar. The court has jurisdiction over Jharkhand state.
About the Opportunity
Applications are invited from the eligible candidates for engagement of Law Researchers/ Research Associates in The High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi on a contractual basis at a monthly remuneration of Rs. 30,000/- only.

Roles and Responsibilities
Carry out the Research duties under direct control of the Hon’ble Judge with whom he/she is attached.
To read the case files and prepare the case summary, notes and chronological events of such a comprehensive nature that it may give a complete view of the matter to the Hon’ble Judge including the legal questions involved and the latest case laws having bearing on the cases either ways.
To search out case law, articles, papers and other relevant materials required in discharge of judicial and administrative work, assistance in preparation of judgments, corrections and proof reading.
To remain present in the Court during hearing of cases and to prepare notes of arguments along with research on citations.
To identify facts, issued and questions that may arise in the course of arguments or as may be relevant for judgment.
To maintain record of judgments passed by the Hon’ble Judge along with the point of law decided in that particular case and to maintain it in such a manner as to be very conveniently available to the Hon’ble Judge for any purpose whatsoever and retrievable as and when required.
To perform whatever is directed in the course of engagement of him/her with regard to procedural and substantive law.
To assist the Hon’ble Judge in preparation of any speech/academic paper and provide assistance in important conferences.
To be acquainted with court procedures viz., method of filing of various categories of cases, provisions of law, movement of cases before and after filing, etc
Maintain statistical reports including delivery of judgments.
Maintenance of books, research papers and materials.
Eligibility
Educational qualification:
Any fresh Law Graduate/ Post Graduate from a University/College recognised by the Bar Council of India shall be eligible to apply.
Students studying in the 5th year of a 5 year Law course or Final year of a 3 year Law course will also be eligible for engagement and their final selection would be subject to their passing of the final year examination of LL.B. prior to their engagement.
Candidates having familiarity with computer will get preference in matter of selection.
The candidature of a candidate who is practicing Lawyer must be recommended by a designated Senior Advocate or in case applicant is other than Lawyer, by the Head of the last Law School/College/University attended by him/her.
The candidates who have passed all his/her examinations in the first attempt with at least 60% aggregate marks will alone be eligible to apply.
The candidates pursuing Post Graduate degree in Law or any other Degrees or Programme requiring their compulsory attendance will not be eligible to apply for the engagement.
Age: A candidate shall not be less than 21 years and not more than 28 years of age, as on the date of advertisement.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent judicial body established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to adjudicate disputes arising out of the interpretation and application of the Convention.
The Tribunal is composed of 21 independent members, elected from among persons enjoying the highest reputation for fairness and integrity and of recognized competence in the field of the law of the sea.
The Tribunal has jurisdiction over any dispute concerning the interpretation or application of the Convention, and over all matters specifically provided for in any other agreement which confers jurisdiction on the Tribunal (Statute, article 21).
The Tribunal is open to States Parties to the Convention (i.e. States and international organisations which are parties to the Convention). It is also open to entities other than States Parties, i.e., States or intergovernmental organisations which are not parties to the Convention, and to state enterprises and private entities “in any case expressly provided for in Part XI or in any case submitted pursuant to any other agreement conferring jurisdiction on the Tribunal which is accepted by all the parties to that case” (Statute, article 20)
About the Internship Opportunity
The Tribunal (ITLOS) offers a limited number of internships (20) each year to students and recent graduates of law, international relations, public relations, political science, library science and translation.
Interns work under the supervision of Registry officials on matters relevant to the Tribunal’s work. The 3-month programme allows students to gain an understanding of the way in which the Tribunal functions and to participate in the work of the Registry.
Interns are expected to be able to contribute to the work of the Tribunal in fields such as the law of the sea, public international law, international organizations and international relations, political science, public information, library science and translation.
Tasks at the Legal Office
Legal Office
The Legal Office consists of 4 legal officers, working under the supervision of the Head of the Legal Office. The Legal Office works in close cooperation with the Registrar,
conducting research on international law, law of the sea and administrative legal matters;
examining legal instruments and precedents relating to the work of the Tribunal;
drafting judicial reports on questions relating to the work of the Tribunal;
serving the meetings of the Tribunal and preparing background material, reports and papers; and
providing legal advice on a diverse range of substantive and procedural questions of law as well as on the management and administration of the Registry.
Tasks involved:
Interns work under the close supervision of one of the legal officers. They carry out research on a variety of legal issues and prepare notes for their supervisor, the other legal officers, or the Registrar.
Interns are also requested to conduct research on a specific topic of their own choice, upon which they prepare a written paper and give an oral presentation to the Legal Office at the end of the internship.
Together with other interns serving at the Tribunal, they also prepare the weekly press review covering recent developments in the law of the sea.

Applicants should:
have completed at least 3 years of university studies;
normally be engaged in a degree-granting or postgraduate course at the time of application and also during their internship, or be a recent graduate;
normally not be more than 35 years of age;
have a good command of English and/or French; and
have an interest in international law, in particular international law of the sea, international affairs or international institutions and organizations.
ITLOS interns are students or recent graduates from all over the world, all sharing an interest in international law and in particular the law of the sea. Their backgrounds are varied and depend on the department they are attached to: those in the Legal Office have usually completed their first law degree or are already working on a masters in international law or a PhD in a law of the sea-related topic.
In the selection of candidates, due consideration is given to geographical diversity and gender balance.
Availability of Funding
A Trust Fund for the Law of the Sea was established in 2010 with the aim of providing financial assistance to participants from developing countries. A limited amount of funding is available to assist interns with their living and travel costs.
In addition to the requirements for participation in the programme, the following criteria apply in determining eligibility for internship funding:
Applicants must be nationals of a developing country included on the OECD list and should normally be resident in that country; and
Applicants should be in need of financial assistance to help cover the travel and living costs associated with an internship in Hamburg.
Candidates should indicate their interest in applying for funding in the online application form. Late applications for funding will not be considered.

International Law is a generic term for all the rules and principles that governs the relation of nations and other international institutions with each other. It also provides the normative framework for a world order which is based on responsible state behavior. While a major part of this responsibility entails global peace and security, international law is equally concerned with wide range of issues dealing with human rights, disarmament, international crime, refugees, migration, treatment of prisoners, the use of force, and the conduct of war, among others.
The last decade has thrown some major challenges to international law and the need for a stable and well equipped world order has never been more acute. The abstract of a research paper on any of the given theme shall be duly sent. The abstract shall not exceed 300 words.

Eligibility, Team Size and Other Information
The competition is open for students who are pursuing LLB three year / five- year course during the current academic year.
Each team should consist of 3 members. This number cannot be modified under any circumstances.
There shall be 2 speakers and 1 researcher designated for each team. The researcher shall be allowed to argue with prior permission of the court and National Administrator in case of illness of the designated speakers.
Teams should not disclose the identity of their institution; such disclosure shall invite penalties including disqualification. The decision for the same shall be at the discretion of the National Administrator.

For the purpose of an efficient competition, there is a capping of only 30 teams on first-come-first-serve basis who shall participate in this competition.
