Maharshi University of Information Technology, NOIDA, U.P. and National Labour Law Association, New Delhi are organising the 3rd Maharishi Mahesh Yogi International Conference On Comparative Labour Laws in South-Asia: Labour and Management Perspective on 28th and 29th August 2023.

About the Conference

The year 2020 was a defining period for countries, particularly, in South Asia.  The COVID-19 pandemic caused not only a large number of deaths and displacements but also hastened the process towards digital-centred business models.  The rapid growth of the platform economy, MSMEs, and consumers’ preference for online shopping, etc. have created conditions that are entirely different from the conditions for which the prevailing labour laws were enacted. Additionally, the havoc caused by turbulence, both natural (such as flood and drought) and manmade (such as political, trade and religious) have collectively caused humanitarian crises.  These developments are having a detrimental effect on the workers, their employability, and their rights at work.  In this background, it is imperative for the national governments in the sub-region to understand the ongoing trends in the world of work, examine the working of the social dialogue institutions, and amend the existing labour/employment laws so that the same are in tune with the ongoing changes.

About the Professor S P Sathe 17th International Conference on the Intersection of Law and Economics with Gender

The year 2023 heralds great glory to the prestigious institution of Indian Law Society’s Law College, marking 100 years of the college. This is just the start for many glorious years to come, for the institution is the pioneer in imparting legal education to the masses. This year, the college will be hosting its flagship event, the Remembering S.P. Sathe: Professor S.P. Sathe 17th International Conference on the theme of “Intersection of Law and Economics with Gender.” In recognition of the changing horizons in legal education, the theme for this year’s conference is interdisciplinary in nature, investigating the correlation between Law, Economics and Gender.

Law & Economics evolved as a singular independent discipline due to the contributions of Mr Ronald Coase and Mr Richard Posner, in the 1960s. The application of economic principles to law with the aim of maximizing compliance and reducing unwarranted results, better known as the economic analysis of laws, has gained significance in contemporary times. The principle of economic analysis has been applied to various legal fields such as Property Law, Contract Law, Competition Law, Torts, etc. with positive results.

The conference seeks to understand the nuances of the application of economic principles to gender-based laws and policies.

It focuses on the gender aspect of the domain of law and economics which priorly has been a relatively under-explored field.

Despite many positive developments in the past, gender-based exclusion and marginalization in terms of legislation and gender pay exist in almost every country’s workforce. Women are under-represented in the informal economy and poverty; their labour force participation has remained lower than that of men in the past decades. Legal barriers continue to prevent women from reaching their economic potential in many nations. The conference would focus on the intersection of social, economic, legal, and physiological dimensions of gender, with the intention to explore diverse patterns of gender inclusivity. The aim of the conference is to better facilitate comprehension and interpretation of gender as an important component of an economy.

About the Conference

The year 2022 witnessed several discussions in the public domain on critical areas of both substantive and procedural aspects of criminal law. Many of these discussions concern key research areas for academicians and lawyers alike. The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India (SCI) kept the archaic sedition law under s.124 A, IPC, in abeyance, pending its decision on the constitutionality of the provision. On the other hand, it was observed that cases were still being registered under s. 66A, IT Act, which was struck down as unconstitutional by the SCI.

There were polarized debates after the release of convicted prisoners in a rape case, which again pointed our attention towards state-level policies for premature release. We also witnessed how a drug case involving a celebrity’s son brought to the fore important issues surrounding the discretion of agencies involved in the apprehension of suspects. There were also significant debates on PMLA, bail, rights of prisoners, criminalization of politics, etc. Criminal law, therefore, occupied an important space in public discourse. Criminal law discourse has to promote a deeper understanding of several issues surrounding crime prevention, prosecution and punishment.

About ILS Law College

The year 2022-2023 marks a golden period for the Indian Law Society and ILS Law College, where the Society completes 100 years, and the College steps into its centennial year. The College has been a forerunner in providing inclusive and innovative legal education. Generations of illustrious alumni have carried ahead its reputation in all walks of life. Guided by the philosophy that, ‘Everything is centred in law,’ ILS has nurtured its own culture by effectively combining the theory and practice of law.

About the Centre for International Law:

The Centre was set up in 2014 with the goal to increase awareness about International Law. Its aim is to instil a passion for the subject by initiating discussions and conducting activities involving the various aspects and developments of International Law. It is student-driven and is instrumental in organising debates, presentations, and seminars.

About the Conference and the Theme:

Traditionally, the global order has largely been examined from a historical and political perspective, rather than an economic one. However, the focus of development,  now more than ever, has shifted to increasingly take into account economic factors. As the world witnesses a minute-to-minute shift in the field of global trade and economy, new challenges emerge daily. The rapid pace of globalisation and increasing interaction between countries vis-a-vis their economic interests has given rise to a myriad of issues, which is where the ever-evolving field of International Economic Law takes centre-stage, as newer ideas are forged in this realm. How the field of international law evolves to accommodate them warrants a detailed deliberation on some of the most pressing issues faced today.

The conference seeks to explore and delve deeper into such issues and ideas emerging today as they gain ground, with the wider field of International Economic Law in the backdrop. Moulded around the overarching themes, each session looks at specific issues occurring in the current global scenario. Investigations into contemporary economic order will also be conducted along with studies into how they shape the international legal and regulatory regime. The most pertinent events in the areas of International Monetary Law, Trade Law, Investment Law, Antitrust Law and Dispute Settlement etc. will be at the heart of these discussions.

Objectives of the Conference:

  • To shed light on the implications of international law governing the environment and oil trade on the global economy;
  • To understand the modified roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in light of developments in the global economic order;
  • To analyse the development of business and economic interests of States and corporations through the lens of international economic law; and
  • To assess these issues with a specific focus on their implications for India.

Conference Sessions:

Session 1: Changing Geopolitics around the Global Oil Trade
Session 2: The Crypto-Currency Conundrum
Session 3: State-Owned Enterprises, their Effects on Competition Law, and Dispute Settlement
Session 4: Environmental Regulations vs Economic Interests: What is the Best Approach?
Session 5: IPRs under International Investment Law
Session 6: Paper Presentation

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:

Climate Change has become an undeniable fact. The impact of anthropological and natural activities degrading the environment has unequivocally resulted in global warming, which may have triggered a ticking clock toward the global apocalypse ending life on earth as we know it. Climate Change and Global warming have caused a threat not only to human lives but also to the lives of flora, fauna, and even micro-organisms. The increasing human population and needs have caused a significant increase in industrialization, commodification, and commercialization, which has led to environmental issues such as deforestation, waste generation, increasing GHG and Non-GHG emissions, freshwater and ocean degradation, etc. These environmental issues are responsible for rising sea levels, changing temperatures, Arctic melting, food scarcity, and damage to living organisms. Arguably anthropologic interventions may not be the only cause of climate change natural causes also play a part. Forest fires, volcanoes, and earthquakes also affect the environment. Nevertheless, it is only with a human intervention that we can hope to resolve the disastrous impact of environmental degradation. The initiatives towards disaster management, carbon trading, carbon sequestration, biotechnology, and clean energy, green building, may provide mechanisms to deal with the upcoming challenges from climate change.

The International Conference on Climate Justice and Sustainable Environment (ICCJSE) 2023 provides a stage for a plethora of ideas that can revolutionize the prevailing knowledge on climate change and provide a platform for discussion and the creation of new ideas. It provides an apt forum for bringing together scientific, economic, social, and legal experts working in academia, research institutions, industry companies, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies to deliberate on the urgent environmental concerns facing the entire planet and to give them an opportunity to share the recent scientific knowledge, management approaches, and engineering solutions for the dilemmas set by climate change.
