University of Liverpool is inviting fellowship applications for the International Visiting Research Fellowship Programme 2022-23.

ABOUT

The School of Law and Social Justice, comprising the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology and the Liverpool Law School, is an internationally renowned centre for innovative, multidisciplinary research with a distinct expertise in and commitment to social justice issues.

Over 100 academics are engaged in this vibrant research environment which is supported by nine dynamic research clusters and housed within a newly refurbished state-of-the-art building, designed sensitively around our research and impact needs.

As part of its commitment to nurturing international research partnerships, the School of Law and Social Justice is inviting applications for incoming International Visiting Research Fellowships.

The scheme aims to attract academics from outside of the UK to develop or extend collaborations with existing staff and/or research clusters within the School.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants should be of postdoctoral status or have equivalent experience and must have the support of an academic member of staff based permanently in the School of Law and Social Justice. That academic member of staff will be responsible for hosting the visiting fellow if successful.

While there is no fixed period for the fellowships, applications for placements of less than two weeks’ duration will not normally be considered.

EXPECTATIONS FOR FELLOWS

Fellows will be expected to develop new or extend existing research collaborations with staff or clusters in the School and outgoing Institution. As a minimum this will include the following:

> presenting a work-in-progress lecture or seminar;

> participating actively in the research events and activities of the School/research cluster, commensurate with their research;

> developing or extending collaborative links, via for example, joint publications and/or joint application/s for research funding;

> acknowledging School of Law and Social Justice support in any publications or other outputs resulting from their Fellowship;

> writing a short reflective blogpost on the virtual online fellowship for the School of Law and Social Justice blog.

producing an ‘End of Fellowship’ report (of no more than 1,000 words) detailing their activities and achievements during the Fellowship.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should submit a summary CV and complete the 2022-23 – International Visiting Research Fellowships – Application Form with a proposal of up to 1,000 words addressing the following points:

  • A short summary of research expertise and reasons for the research visit
  • A detailed outline of proposed activities for the duration of the visit
  • How your visiting fellowship will contribute to the research culture of the School of Law and Social Justice (this may include plans for collaborative funding bids, a contribution to staff or doctoral research training, development of collaborations)
  • Details of the envisaged outcomes arising from the fellowship such as external funding, joint publications and potential long-term research partnerships
  • A breakdown of projected costs (travel/accommodation/subsistence) and any other sources of co-funding available.
  • Applications should include a supporting statement from their collaborating partner based in the School of Law and Social Justice.

Applications will be assessed by a panel of senior academic staff from the School of Law and Social Justice and applicants will be notified of the outcome within one month. Fellowships should commence within 6 months of approval.

The World Movement for Democracy is inviting applications for the HURFORD YOUTH FELLOWSHIP 2023.

ABOUT

The Hurford Youth Fellowship Program seeks to build leadership skills and harness the potential of young democracy activists from around the world. Through the Program, young activists spend three months at the World Movement’s Secretariat, during which they expand their global connections, share experiences with other activists from democracy movements around the world, and contribute to the development of the World Movement for Democracy. Hurford Youth Fellows engage in strategic meetings; conduct research; and organize and lead presentations, online discussions, and information-sharing sessions on key democracy issues.

Upon the successful completion of each fellowship, the fellows serve as a regional/country focal point, working with the Hurford Youth Fellowship Alumni Network to remain involved and take the lead in youth-related activities.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants interested in the Hurford Youth Fellows Program must be no older than 30 years of age. They must demonstrate a strong interest in democratic activism and in the advancement of democracy in their respective communities, as well as worldwide. Youth affiliated with civil society organizations are especially encouraged to apply.

SELECTIONS PROCESS

Fellows will be selected by the World Movement Secretariat staff, NED regional program staff, and the Hurford Youth Fellowship Alumni Network following an application process. Selection will be based on a set of criteria including demonstrated activism or interest in the advancement of democracy, a desire to network with others, and a clear explanation of how the fellowship will benefit their own efforts for advancing democracy.

ACLU invites rising law graduates to apply for a fellowship program to work with them as a legal fellow for Criminal Law Reform Project Fall 2023 Fellowship.

ABOUT

The ACLU invites rising third-year law students and law graduates to apply for a sponsorship opportunity to work with us as a Legal Fellow for up to two years. The Criminal Law Reform Project (CLRP)of the National office in New York, NY seeks applicants to consider for a sponsored fellowship such as Equal Justice Works or other public interest fellowships to begin in the fall of 2023.

CLRP seeks to sponsor a fellow in the New York office to undertake a project combatting policing harm through state constitutions and creative litigation to support investments in alternatives to police responses. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct legal research and analysis and develop theories to support new litigation projects 
  • Draft legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs 
  • Interview witnesses and potential clients
  • Participate in discovery and trial practice
  • Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials
  • Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys
  • Help manage summer legal internship program and supervise student interns
  • Engage in public speaking and attend meetings and/or conferences as needed
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

COMPENSATION

The ACLU has a litigator scale that determines pay for attorneys in our Legal Department. The range of salaries are the following, based on year of law school graduation (please consult the hiring manager for specific salary details, based on individual circumstances):

  • 0-2 years since law school graduation: $76,320- $87,787 
  • 3-5 years since law school graduation: $93,493-$104,553
  • 6-10 years since law school graduation: $107,690- $121,206
  • 11-15 years since law school graduation: $124,843-$140,511
  • 16-20 years since law school graduation: $144,726-$162,891
  • 21-25 years since law school graduation: $167,778-$188,835
  • 26-30+ years since law school graduation: $194,500- $218,912 

These salaries are reflective of positions based in New York, NY. The salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. DURATION

STIPEND

Fellows receive a stipend of $78000 plus an additional $5000 to cover project expenses.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants in the humanities and social sciences must:
1. Have received their doctorate (or appropriate terminal degree) in the area of their proposed project at least two years prior to their appointment as a fellow (December 2021 for the 2023-24 fellowship year).
2. Have published a monograph or at least two articles in refereed journals or edited collections.

Applicants in science, engineering, and mathematics must:
1. Have received their doctorate in the area of the proposed project at least two years prior to their appointment as a fellow (December 2021 for the 2023-24 fellowship year).
2. Have published at least five articles in refereed journals. Most science, engineering, and math fellows have published dozens of articles.

Applicants in the creative arts must meet discipline-specific eligibility requirements, as outlined below:
Film and Video: Applicants in this discipline must have a body of independent work of significant achievement. Such work will typically have been exhibited in galleries or museums, shown in film or video festivals, or broadcast on television.

Visual Arts: Applicants in this discipline must show strong evidence of achievement, with a record of at least five years of work as a professional artist, including participation in several curated group shows and at least two professional solo exhibitions.

Fiction and Nonfiction: Applicants in these disciplines must have one of the following:
a) one or more published books;
b) a contract for the publication of a book-length manuscript; or
c) at least three shorter works (longer than newspaper articles) published.

Poetry: Applicants in this discipline must have had published at least 20 poems in the last five years or published a book of poetry, and must be in the process of completing a manuscript.

Journalism: Applicants in this discipline are required to have worked professionally as a journalist for at least five years.

Playwriting: Applicants in this discipline must have a significant body of independent work in the form. This will include, most typically, plays produced or under option.

Music Composition: It is desirable, but not required, for applicants in music composition to have a PhD or DMA. Most importantly, the applicant must show strong evidence of achievement as a professional artist, with a record of recent performances.

Individuals who are applying as practitioners must have held senior leadership positions in non-profits, government, or the private sector. Practitioners should have at least ten years of relevant professional experience and be acknowledged as leaders in their fields.
