About the Organiser

Centre for International Trade Law (CITL) is a research centre of National Law University Odisha (NLUO), set up in 2015 with the vision of encouraging research in the domain of international trade law through a wide variety of activities including webinars, conferences, publications etc.

The Centre has published a book on ‘Trade Facilitation and the WTO’ in collaboration with the Cambridge Scholars Press.

About the Webinar

The WTO is a trade organization but its scope is expanding to the control and regulation of production as well. The fisheries agreement currently being negotiated is the latest example. The increasing concern about the consequences of growth in trade and consumerism for the ecology of the planet has intensified the trade and environment debate.

But tussle continues as to which side the concept of sustainable development should tilt, on the side of the environment or development. The lack of consensus on the draft Fisheries Agreement under the WTO is a reflection of this tussle.

The idea of sustainable fishing is based on the US policy of Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) adopted in 1948. Although claimed to be based on science it was guided more by international politics and economics.

Writers have since long criticized MSY and attributed the depletion of fish stocks to US policy and industrial fishing. Scientists argue that the ocean is different and techniques and policies employed for agriculture management cannot be transposed to manage the ocean environment.

Instead of concentrating on particular fish species, the focus should be on the assemblage of fish species. The draft Agreement appears to be based on the MSY policy.

Moreover, the draft lacks the support of many developing countries. This is because the provisions relating to subsidies allegedly do not take into account the concerns of coastal less developed countries and their farmers for whom subsidy is a question of livelihood.

Submission Guidelines

  • Original papers within 5000 words are invited from teachers, researchers, students and others for presentation in the webinar.
  • The paper is to be written in Times New Roman, Font Size: Heading-14, Text-12 in A4 format, Line Spacing-1.5, Alignment-Justified.
  • Authors are requested to adhere to the Bluebook (21st ed.) citation format for footnoting in Times New Roman Font 10 size with Line Spacing-1.
  • There can be a maximum of one Co-Author on a paper.
  • All submissions (Abstract and full-length paper) must be made in .doc or .docx format only.
  • The Abstract and full-length paper should be in English language. The working language of webinar and presentations shall be English.
  • Only one paper per participant will be permitted. Multiple submissions will lead to disqualification.
Papers may relate to but are not limited to the topics mentioned below:
    • Challenges for the preservation of fish stocks
    • International initiatives for the preservation of fisheries
    • Impact of international trade on fisheries
    • Contribution of subsidies to the depletion of fish stocks
    • Livelihood of small fishermen in developing countries
    • Prospective participants may contribute to any other issue related to the webinar topic.

About the Seminar

Elections provide a way to the people to assert their voice, opinion and choose the person whose priorities and ideas matches with them most. Elections ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the elected candidates.

Elections in India are also a platform for the public to voice their resentment against a ruling party. Elections, being a regular exercise, occurring every five years in India, the ruling parties are kept in check and made to consider the demands of the public.

Participation in election process is one of the most important symbol and foundational concept of democracy. If people are allowed to participate in the political process, only then a political system can be described as a Democratic one and for participation voting right is the most effective way to participate in the governance of the nation.

When citizens collectively elect its representatives, it affirms the notion that they govern themselves by free choice. Therefore, it can be opined that the ‘Participation’ is a foundational virtue of democracy.

For years, India has witnessed the conduct of successful elections, peaceful changes of government at the Centre and in the States, people exercising freedom of expression, movement and religion along with the complaints about the motivated agendas for elections, immoral practices during the election campaigns, inequality in representation of certain communities/groups, injustice or non-fulfilment of expectations of various sections of society.

Recently, COVID-Pandemic has given an opportunity for exploring the technological innovations for the conduct of elections and it is yet to be speculated through the eyes of a law student. Social media also poses new challenges to voting patterns in India.

About the Seminar

The Agricultural Sector continues to be the largest provider of livelihood in India. The fourth advance estimates for the year 2020-2021 released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India show a record 308.65 million tonnes of food grain production in India.

The initiatives brought by the Government post-independence and the advancement of technology has accelerated the growth of the agricultural economy. With the advent of Globalization in the 1990s, modern Agro technologies were introduced, leading to the rise in trade of agricultural exports.

However, Globalization failed to contribute towards reducing poverty and other social inequalities in the country. In addition, the increasing population and increasing average income might lead to an increase in the demand for food within the limited cultivable land.

Further, to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, India needs to prioritize policies that end hunger, achieve food security, and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Legislative gaps and lack of proper implementation of the existing laws have impacted the agricultural production, availability of agri inputs, agricultural marketing and supply chains rendering the farmers vulnerable to agrarian crisis.

In this context, this conference is held with an objective to deliberate on the following themes and provide measures to resolve the issues faced by the agricultural system in India.

About the Organiser

National Law University, Jodhpur is a public law school and a National Law University established under the National Law University, Jodhpur, Act, 1999 enacted by the Rajasthan State Legislature.

About the Seminar

Family law plays a crucial role in nearly every aspect of our lives. The past few decades have witnessed myriad changes in the realm of family law in India. These changes have been triggered by transitioning notions of equality, liberty, and justice. Stakeholders from various strata of the societal edifice have identified and advocated the need to address these concerns.

Family laws in India are always associated with religious personal laws and its ambiguity when it comes to the issue of minority religions as well as its treatment of women has been a source of consistent critique. Further scrutiny, however, reveals that the institutions that form the basis of family laws itself are challenged in several ways.

Currently, family as a concept is no longer confined to blood relations and has expanded to include adoption, surrogacy, and alternative family structures such as the hijra communities or even polycules.

Marriage is no longer restricted to cisgender; heterosexual couples and the queer rights movement is fighting a two-fold battle to include queer persons within the scope of individuals eligible to get married while simultaneously challenging the institution of marriage itself.

This warrants an urgent conversation on how family law can be reimagined to not merely accommodate diversity but fulfil the needs and secure the rights of the individuals and communities it is applicable to.

This changing understanding of family not only affects the legal framework but also has consequences on the social and economic rights of individuals. Scrutiny of the existing framework from an academic lens can assist in confronting the variety of dilemmas it presents.

The National Law University, Jodhpur is organizing a two-day National Seminar on: “Revisiting the Current Regime of Family Law in India”.

This seminar strives to revisit the family law of India to complement critical gender theory, social and economic justice while simultaneously keeping it grounded within the constitutional theory and a rights-oriented framework.

They hope to engage with and contribute to contemporary family law scholarship by facilitating academic discussions with emerging scholars, lawyers, and academics.

The Seminar shall be held over a period of two days where esteemed speakers shall be deliberating on the key issues pertaining to the contemporary challenges the family law regime in India faces.

Seminar Structure

This seminar shall be conducted over a period of 2 days through an online platform, i.e., Cisco Webex:

  • Day 1: The seminar shall commence with a keynote address by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor and the Guest of Honour. This would be followed by the parallel sessions of paper presentations chaired by the esteemed panelists. The day would end with a panel discussion.
  • Day 2: Paper presentations will continue, followed by a panel discussion. The seminar will conclude with a keynote address by the Guest of Honour followed by the vote of thanks.

Seminar Objectives

  • To encourage discourse on feminist and rights-oriented approaches to family law.
  • To provide participants with an opportunity to research on the emerging and relevant areas of family law.

This month, submissions are invited on the theme- Principles of Constitutional Democracy and Indian Elections.

A Note on the Theme

Elections in India function as the reins that bind the spirit of democracy, and as citizens, we must keep the reins as taut as possible. Election Laws in India have evolved over the years, with the Election Commission(s) carefully constructing regulations for elections, to fulfill the promise of free and fair elections.

The world’s largest and most eclectic democracy cannot afford to compromise on a robust and efficient electoral mechanism. Thus, there arises the need for a  thorough understanding of the existing system, its merits and demerits, and possibilities for improvement. It is with this motive that the Constitutional Law Society, TNNLU has decided to explore the system of elections in this theme.

Sub-Themes for Engagement

  • Enforcement of Model Code of Conduct
  • The Election Commission of India as a Judicial Body
  • Anti-Defection Laws and Freedom of Expression
  • The Right to Recall Elected Representatives
  • Electoral Reservations
  • Impact of NOTA on Electoral Outcomes
  • Binding Effect of Election Manifestos
  • Hate Speech in Election Campaigning
  • Analysis of First Past the Post as a Voting System
  • Electoral Bonds Scheme: A Constitutional Analysis

In this call, we welcome your insight on the above topics in the form of articles, opinion pieces, case comments, legislative comments or book reviews. The submission guidelines are available here.

Submission Deadline

The deadline for the thematic submission is March 21, 2022.
