PRS Legislative Research, commonly referred to as PRS, is an Indian non-profit organization that was established in September 2005 as an independent research institute to make the Indian legislative process better informed, more transparent, and participatory. PRS is based in New Delhi.
Work Details
Each Member of Parliament (MP) in India represents over two million constituents. The Indian Parliament passes an average of 60 Bills every year. MPs make laws and address complex policy issues across a wide range of sectors. Given the diversity of issues and the technical nature of many of them, it is not possible for MPs to be well versed on all such issues.
It is in this context that PRS provides MPs analysis on legislation and policy to help them prepare for parliamentary debates.
PRS was co-founded by C.V. Madhukar and M.R. Madhavan in 2005. M.R. Madhavan is currently the President of PRS. The Board of Directors is headed by Mr. S. Ramadorai. The initiative was incubated in the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), New Delhi, which is a leading Indian think tank. Since 2013, the initiative has been institutionalized as the Institute for Policy Research Studies, a not-for-profit Section 8 Company.
The work of PRS is entirely funded through philanthropic donations and grants by a number of Indian institutions and individuals.
About the Internship
PRS offers rolling internships throughout the year.
The PRS staff consists of a team of dedicated professionals with different areas of expertise and is broadly divided into the research and outreach departments.
While the research team analyses legislative and policy issues of topical interest, the outreach team tracks the working of the legislatures and legislators, manages citizen engagement, and is PRS’s interface with the MPs and MLAs.
A prospective intern can apply for an internship in either/both departments.
Structure of the Internship
The internship varies from session to non-session time.
During a Parliament session, PRS’s work is guided by the issues taken up in Parliament, and interns are expected to work with the analysts on any and all projects.
During non-session periods, the interests of the individual intern are taken into consideration, and he/she is matched with an analyst(s) doing related work.
The successful completion of a PRS internship requires the intern to pursue and complete an internship project. The intern will be assisting analysts in their research, as well as undertaking an internship project.
Internship Duration
The duration of the internship is flexible but is normally between four and eight weeks. Interns can work from their homes.
Roles of Interns
In addition to a deep interest in the working of Parliament and the legislative process in India, an intern should have:
Strong writing skills

Theme: Constitutionality of Cryptocurrency In India
Law and Technology have often shared a unique relationship. Not only does law seeks to govern various operational aspects in the usage of technology, it has also used technology for the purposes of its implementation. Technological advancements have often posed various challenges to law which the latter is frequently struggling with.
One such area in which this struggle has manifested itself is in the domain of cryptocurrency. The emergence of cryptocurrency as a concept can be attributed to increasing development of information and technology, posing numerous challenges in the field of data protection, constitutionality of technology and privacy, with a major impact on finances and governance. Taxation is often perceived as a vast & highly complicated subject requiring considerable expertise and many law graduates are seen to be reluctant in taking up taxation as their area of practice. Consequently, the practice of taxation is restricted to a limited set of advocates though taxation laws are one of the most extensively applicable laws in India. In order to develop the next generation of taxation practitioners, it is imperative that law students are given a practical legal platform and this Taxation Moot by School of Excellence in Law, Chennai aims to do just that.
Late Shri. K.R. Ramamani was a legal giant in the field of taxation and was well known throughout India, especially in the south, for his legal acumen and expertise in the field of taxation. He was sought after by people from all walks of life for his expertise and was often referred to as “Palkhivala of the South”. He led the prestigious Subbaraya Aiyar, Padmanabhan & Ramamani (S.A.P.R) Advocates (http://saprlaw.com) firm to great heights.
His commitment towards the legal profession, in-depth understanding of the law and his interest in teaching the future generation despite his busy schedule made him a lawyer par excellence. There can be no better way of remembering the memory of perhaps one of the most eminent taxation lawyers in India than by conducting a National Tax Moot Court Competition in his name.
So, in a fitting tribute to Late Shri. K.R. Ramamani, the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai in association with S.A.P.R. Advocates started a National level Taxation Moot Court Competition back in 2010 with an aim of providing the participants a high-quality moot experience focused on taxation. They are now organizing the 12th edition of the K.R.Ramamani Taxation Moot Court Competition & 12th V.S. Sundaram Research Paper Competition, 2022 (http://www.krrtaxmoot.com).
The Competition is set to take place in a hybrid form. Virtually through the video conferencing application “Google Meet”™ on 24th-27th February 2022.
The Final Round of the 12th K.R. Ramamani Memorial Taxation National Moot Court Competition 2022 will be held on 6th March 2022 at the School of Excellence in Law, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Taramani, Chennai – 600113.
The felicitation of the winners of the V.S.Sundaram Research Paper Competition, 2022 will happen during the valedictory ceremony on March 6, 2022.
This edition will be graced by Sitting Justices of Hon’ble Supreme Court and Hon’ble High Court of Madras, Members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal as well as leading lawyers and accountants.
