About RSRR

The RGNUL Student Research Review (RSRR) Journal is a bi-annual, student-run, blind peer-reviewed, flagship journal based at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab. It has been founded with the objective of facilitating arguments in black and white.

Call for Papers

The Editorial Board invites submissions from academicians, practitioners, legal luminaries and students on the theme “Unboxing the Legal Potential of the Sports & Gaming Industry: Redesigning India’s Way of Playing.”

The sports and gaming industry in India is highly competitive and is undergoing rapid developments to expand its global reach. Due to the cultural phenomenon of traditional sports and the advent of the internet and technology, the sports and gaming industry has undergone an unprecedented transformation in the last few decades.

This, however, has been accompanied by a plethora of challenges. In view of the unexplored potential of the Indian sports & gaming industry, the novel challenges and concerns and the lack of a sound legal mechanism, RSRR seeks to delve into the theme to review and analyse the present policy framework in light of the everyday developments.

The primary objective behind this theme is to provide a platform for legal analysis, insightful commentary, and in-depth analysis that can bridge the gap between relevant legal developments in the sports and gaming sectors, and ultimately enhance the discourse surrounding such stigmatized topics.

About NLUJAA

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is a National Law University located in Guwahati, Assam, India. It was established in 2009 through an Act passed by the State Legislature of Assam as a public university dedicated to the field of legal education.

Concept Note

Traditional Knowledge (TK) is defined by WIPO as knowledge, know-how, skills and practises which are developed, sustained and then passed on from one generation to the other. It includes tradition-based literary, artistic or scientific works; performances; designs; marks, names and symbols; undisclosed information; and other kinds of tradition-based innovations and creations which results from the intellectual activity in the industrial, scientific, literary or artistic fields.

Around the world, communities have developed a wide variety of TK. TK plays an important role in the sustainable use of local resources and biodiversity conservation. However, there are many threats to TK today, one of the biggest being bio-piracy. There are deliberations on the intellectual property rights (IPR) regime offering aids in the protection of TK. Though some claim that the IPR system does not provide solutions to the major challenges that are faced by the communities who are repositories of TK, there are still many who believe that the IPR regime can offer certain tools which can be used somehow to protect, promote or prevent the misappropriation of such traditional forms of innovation and creativity.

Geographical indications (GI) on the other hand is a very unique IPR. Unlike most IPRs, GI is community-owned. GI can be defined as an indication, sign, name which is used on products to indicate that it originates from a particular location or territory. GI signifies that the product possesses certain characteristics, quality or reputation due to its geographical origin. If properly marketed, GI products can fetch premium prices, thereby, improving the socio-economic condition of the producers of such products.

Interestingly, many of the agricultural, foodstuff, handicraft items etc. that come within TK have the potential to be GI. GI cannot provide a defensive mechanism to protect these TK but can help the communities to improve the economic condition of the people by fetching premium prices.

The aim of the book is to highlight various unique TK/TCEs and GIs of communities in India and particularly in the North-eastern region of India. The book also intends to highlight the unethical exploitation of such TK/TCEs and GIs. The book also seeks to explore the possibility of providing recognition and protection of TK/TCEs and GIs under the IPR Regime.

About the Organisers

The Asian Criminological Society (ACS) was established in 2009 in Macau with the following objectives:

  • to promote the study of criminology and criminal justice across Asia;
  • to enhance co-operation in the fields of criminology and criminal justice by scholars and practitioners;
  • to encourage communication between criminologists and criminal justice practitioners in Asia and the world through publications and conferences; and finally,
  • to foster training and research in criminology and criminal justice in institutions of learning, and in criminal justice agencies.

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is a statutory University established by the Government of Gujarat under the Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India and the UGC.

About the Conference

The epoch-making changes in various technologies, particularly information and communication technologies (ICT) have left its indelible mark on almost all facets of society and criminal justice systems are no exception. The emerging discourse on the interface of cutting-edge ICT and the existing criminal justice systems range from essentialism to situations where technology adds substantial value to the criminal justice processes – from supporting to replacing human discretion in the justice dispensation chain.

We no longer refer to technology per se; instead, we have come to recognize a combination of disruptive technologies. The first is Artificial Intelligence (AI) which encompasses machine learning and intelligent cybernetics.

Second is the Internet of Things (IoT) that has enabled establishing the digital identity of not just all living beings on the planet apart from various inanimate participants in digital processes.

The third is blockchain technology which has a rich collection of applications that are already disrupting evidence systems, particularly in accounting and logistics by introducing new concepts of authenticity, using crypto primitives.

Alongside disruptive technologies, researchers are now looking at two waves of disruption to legal systems that are triggered by the need to relate the existing criminal justice systems to the compelling changes ushered in by disruptive technologies. Brownsword’s seminal work on this subject clearly indicates the power of these two disruptive waves hitting the coast of the existing legal system.

The first wave drives us to examine if the existing laws have lost their fitness-for-purpose in the context of the inroads made by technologies in general; not just ICT. The second wave is more about the ways in which technologies can be harnessed by the criminal justice dispensation system to add value, resulting in a better dispensation of justice.

This conference will address two key questions emanating from the interface of laws and technology, in the context of harnessing technology to improve the criminal justice process. First will be areas where the existing laws are seen as being out-of-sync with contemporary technologies and second will be areas where technology can be used to play a significant role in the criminal justice process; particularly in policing.

Eligibility

This conference is aimed at educators, researchers, academicians and practitioners in the area of Criminology, Victimology, Law, Sociology, Information Technology,  and allied sciences, from Criminal Justice Professionals, NGO practitioners, and from experts in the fields of cyber-crimes, information security and digital forensics.
