The new chairperson appointed by the BCCC, Broadcasting Content Complaints Council, is Justice Gita Mittal who also happens to be the first woman to serve as a Judge and Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and later, in August 2018, she the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
Justice Mittal succeeds former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Vikramajit Sen, whose tenure as BCCC chairperson has ended.
IBF set up an independent self-regulatory body called BCCC in June 2011 to examine content-related complaints relating to all non-news general entertainment channels in India. BCCC consists of 13 members, and it is in its 10th year of operation and has addressed 96,000 and more content related complaints. Former Chief Justice of Madras and Delhi High Courts and former Chairperson of Law Commission of India, Justice A P Shah, was the founding Chairperson of BCCC.
Justice Gita Mittal is a former student of Lady Irwin School, New Delhi, and has completed her higher education from Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She further persuaded her law degree from the Faculty of Law, Delhi University. Her career of legal and judicial dates back to 1981.
Justice Gita Mittal after being appointed said that “I look forward to joining BCCC in its unique journey of self-regulation, which also promises to be an exciting and challenging one.”
